Auditions

Alta Collective is looking for additional sopranos and altos to join us for upcoming project Penelope. We are looking for experienced singers who are expressive performers, good readers, and able to memorise an hour-long show. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an innovative and moving musical experience.

About Alta Collective

A newcomer on the Melbourne chamber music scene, Alta Collective is already charming audiences with a fresh and genre-defying approach to treble vocal music. Combining movement, storytelling, and the collective verve of experienced singers, Alta breathes life into a world of music written for high voices.

 

Alta is committed to inclusive and innovative programming, building relationships with composers and crafting memorable audience experiences. Alta frequently collaborates with other artists and venues to explore new works and performance formats, with past projects including partnerships with Sjaella (Germany), local musicians Pat Jaffe, Monique Clare and ABC Classic.

 

About the Project

Penelope is a narrative song cycle by Sarah Kirkland Snider, blending art song and indie folk to explore themes of memory, trauma, and homecoming through the lens of The Odyssey. This marks the first-ever performance of Penelope arranged for a vocal ensemble, with Juliana Kay’s choral arrangement receiving the composer’s encouragement and support. The work is scored for treble voices, children’s choir, string quintet, percussion and electronics.

 

Audition Information

We are seeking skilled sopranos and altos to join Alta Collective for this production.

• Payment: $900

• Audition Requirement: Prepare a song of your choice; you may wish to select something that reflects the folk or contemporary elements present in Penelope. We will also establish your range and ask you to do some sight-singing

 

Rehearsal & Performance Schedule

Rehearsals:

• Tuesdays: 12 August, 26 August, 2 September (7:30-9:30pm)

• Saturdays: 16 August (11am-2pm), 30 August (4-7pm), 13 September (12-4pm)

• Sitzprobe: 7 October (7:30-9:30pm)

• Intensive Rehearsals: 11 October & 18 October (12-5pm)

Performances:

• 25 & 26 October – Magdalen Laundry, Abbotsford Convent

• 8 November – Wesley of Warragul, Warragul
